Ram Asrey (Est. 1805) Chowk: The Royal Invention of Malai Gilori & Malai Paan

Two Centuries of Sweet Perfection: Ram Asrey

Hidden in the fragrant, winding alleyways of Chowk near Akbari Gate, Ram Asrey has been delighting royalty and commoners alike since 1805. This legendary halwai is celebrated as the undisputed birthplace of Lucknow's most aristocratic confection: the Malai Gilori.

The Royal Prescription for a Paan-Loving Nawab

When the court royal physicians advised Nawab Wajid Ali Shah to cut down on raw areca nuts and tobacco, the master halwais of Ram Asrey accepted the royal challenge. They skimmed pure whole buffalo milk into a paper-thin, translucent layer of malai, wrapped it around a heart of crushed pistachios, almonds, cardamom, and rose crystals, and coated it in edible silver foil.
