The Living Royal Court of Awadh: Picture Gallery
Standing gracefully before the serene waters of the Hussainabad reservoir, the Picture Gallery (Tasweer Khana) offers visitors an intimate face-to-face encounter with every monarch who ruled the golden kingdom of Awadh from 1722 to 1856.
Built in 1838 by King Mohammad Ali Shah, this red-brick palace features a broad elevated terrace, fluted colonnades, and high vaulted ceilings designed to showcase immense portraits painted by European masters such as George Beechey and local Awadhi court artists.
The Famous Optical Illusion Portraits
The star attraction for visitors is the uncanny optical illusion embedded in each canvas. Stand in front of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula or King Ghazi-ud-Din Haider and walk from the left side of the hall to the right: the ruler's gaze, the tip of his golden velvet shoes, and even his ceremonial scabbard subtly swivel to stay locked on you, creating an unforgettable historical illusion.
